Rampion 2 announces support for Cowfold and Littlehampton Harbour Festivals

Rampion 2 is proud to announce its attendance and support of Cowfest, the Cowfold Village Fete being held on Saturday 11th July at Cowfold Recreation Ground, and Littlehampton Harbour Waterfront Festival being held on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th August at Town Quay, Littlehampton and organised by the Littlehampton Harbour Board.

We are absolutely delighted to be the lead supporter of both Cowfest and the Littlehampton Harbour Waterfront Festival for the first time. We hope you can come along to enjoy the festivities and visit our stall - we'll have activities to help children learn about wind energy, you can pick up a free gift and even take a virtual trip to the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm to experience the view from the top of a turbine tower!

Rampion 2 appoints new Project Director

Rampion 2 has appointed a new project director, who started with the project in January this year. Nick Murphy is an experienced offshore renewable energy professional, who has been in the industry since 2004. As a former resident of Brighton & Hove, Nick has developed a love of the Sussex landscape and coastline.

Nick started his career in offshore renewables when he researched the potential for tidal energy around Alderney in the UK Channel Islands. He has spent his career developing and building offshore wind and tidal energy projects in the UK, Canada, USA, Europe and South Korea. Nick’s highlights include:

 

  • Responsibility for a 1.5GW commercial-scale floating wind project in South Korea, with the first phase awarded a tariff in this year’s Government auction
  • Construction Manager for the Principal Contractor on Teesside Wind Farm in the northeast of England
  • Connecting the first tidal energy generator to the UK grid in Orkney
  • Deploying a 400T tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where the sea runs at 11 knots (5.5m/s) and only lobster fishermen go to work

     

Nick was head of operations at SeaRoc, an international renewable energy specialist, which continues to operate out of Chichester, West Sussex. He has spent the last six years living in South Korea, recently returning to the UK. During his time in the Far East, he helped develop Korea’s emerging offshore wind market through projects in the seas around the peninsula. Nick is a keen sailor, scuba diver and cyclist, and loves hiking in the South Downs National Park.

I'm excited to be working on a project so close to my former home. Combined with the output from the operating Rampion Wind Farm, Rampion 2 offers a fantastic opportunity to power around 1million UK homes from a locally produced, clean, green electricity supply.

new JDR submarine

In March 2026, members of the Rampion 2 Team were privileged to visit to the new JDR submarine cable factory in Blyth, Northumberland.

JDR was the supplier of the inter-array cables for the original Rampion Wind Farm. These subsea cables connect the turbines in ‘strings’ to bring the power to the offshore substation. If laid end to end, the Rampion cables would stretch from Brighton to London…and back!

The accompanied factory tour provided a unique insight into the many steps involved in manufacturing a power cable and left the Team in awe at the sheer scale and complexity of the operations.

Engineering student concludes Development Project Management Year in Industry with RWE and Rampion 2

Emma joined RWE, developer of Rampion 2, for her work placement as part of the General Engineering (Energy and Sustainability) MEng course. Before Emma leaves, we wanted to find out how she has found the experience of working with the Rampion 2 Team.

1. When did you first develop an interest in engineering?

At secondary school I enjoyed the teamwork, problem solving and creativity involved in designing and building a model glider under The Flying Start Challenge and designing a sustainable upgrade for a school building with the Industrial Cadets.

2. Why did you approach RWE for a work placement?

I developed an interest in renewables, especially offshore wind, through my university course. RWE offered the perfect insight into the industry and the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience with a leading offshore wind developer.

3. What did you know about the offshore wind industry before you started with us?

I knew it was a growing and important renewables industry and my degree provided basic awareness of the technology involved, but I wasn’t aware of all the many stages and disciplines involved in developing an offshore wind farm.

4. What work experience have you gained during your time with us?

I began investigating the developable area for the Rampion 2 wind farm array and have since worked across other projects covering topics from pontoon requirements to inter-array cable routing.

5. What element have you enjoyed the most?

I was fascinated by the complexity of constraints and processes involved in designing an offshore wind farm layout, I’ve enjoyed meeting many supportive and friendly people, and a boat trip to see the Rampion Wind Farm up close was definitely a highlight!

6. What are you doing next, after you finish this placement?

I’ll be returning to Sheffield University and hope to do my final-year project on the topic of offshore wind monopile decommissioning. I’m looking forward to studying new modules, rejoining societies and catching up with university friends.

7. In what role and industry do you wish to work?

I hope to be an engineer in the renewable energy industry, ideally in the offshore wind sector which I believe is vital for the future, and my placement this year has only increased my enthusiasm for working within it. I ultimately wish to achieve my engineering chartership and hope that my career will help contribute towards tackling climate change.

How onshore cables are installed beneath roads, railways, rivers and the beach?

Rampion 2’s underground onshore cable route requires 27 ‘trenchless crossings’. The preferred installation technique is called ‘horizontal directional drilling’ (HDD), which means we can tunnel under main roads, railways, the beach and River Arun without disturbing the surface, keeping traffic and trains running as normal and minimising environmental impacts to the beach and river.
